“A Little Off the Map. A Lot to Discover.”
Some of the best places aren't on everyone's radar. That's what makes discovering them so much fun. Welcome to San Diego's backcountry, where roads wind through mountain towns, the locals have stories to tell, and something interesting waits around every bend.
Wander historic Gold Rush towns, sample local Julian hard cider, browse artisan studios, or savor the legendary pie. Hike beneath ancient Engelmann oaks, encounter protected Mexican gray wolves, ride mountain horses, pan for real gold, or simply take the winding road just because you can.
Families will find farm adventures and hands-on discovery. Couples can uncover quiet scenic overlooks and wine tastings. Adventure seekers have endless miles of trails, mountain roads, and wide-open country to explore.
Backcountry businesses are wonderfully independent—which means hours can change with weather, seasons, harvests, holidays, and special events.
Some of the best adventures around here aren't destinations. They're the roads between them. Old oaks. Cattle ranches. Switchbacks. Lake views. Big skies. And after dark? A completely different show.

Simple ways to make a little mountain time your own.
Sometimes the best adventure is coming back. Read. Paint. Photograph. Wander beneath the oaks. Watch wildlife. Find a hammock. Catch the sunset. Build a fire when conditions allow. Or do absolutely nothing for a while.

Slow down and discover the feathered neighbors sharing your mountain escape. Watch the oak branches, listen for birdsong, and look overhead for birds gliding through the backcountry sky. Early morning is a lovely time to bring your binoculars and see who’s stirring. You don’t need to know their names to enjoy the show.

Take a deep breath, stretch toward the sky, and welcome a slower pace with yoga on The Perch. Bring your mat and let the mountain views become part of your practice. Gentle morning movement or a quiet stretch near sunset can turn a few spare minutes into a peaceful reset. Follow your own rhythm, whether that means a full routine or simply sitting still and breathing.

When daylight fades, look up for a different kind of mountain magic from almost anywhere on the property, especially The Perch. For the darkest skies, choose a clear night near the new moon and wait until twilight has fully faded. Give your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust, keeping phones and bright lights tucked away. Bring a blanket, settle somewhere safe, and leave a little room for wonder.

Gather beneath the evening sky for a movie on our inflatable screen when movie nights are scheduled. Grab some popcorn, bring a cozy blanket, and settle in for a little outdoor cinema. Cool mountain air and a favorite film make an easy recipe for time together. Ask about upcoming screenings during your stay, as weather and scheduling may affect availability.

Start your day with an easy walk around the property before the day’s adventures begin. Follow designated paths, pause beneath the oaks, and notice the little things you might otherwise hurry past. Bring your camera or simply enjoy a few quiet moments with the mountain waking around you. Wear comfortable shoes and watch your footing on the uneven ground.

Give a simple stone a little personality with an afternoon of rock painting. Think cheerful flowers, tiny mountain scenes, colorful patterns, or a word that makes you smile. It’s an easy way for kids and grown-ups to slow down and create something together. Ask about supplies and suitable stones, and keep your finished treasure as a reminder of your mountain escape.
You don't have to drive anywhere to experience a world-class night sky. Step outside your cabin or glamping dome. Give your eyes a few minutes to adjust. Find the planets. Watch for meteors. The dark mountain canopy above Santa Ysabel puts on a breathtaking show every single clear night.

Highways 76, 78, and 79 connect Lake Henshaw, Santa Ysabel, Mesa Grande, Palomar Mountain, Wynola, Julian, and Cuyamaca through historic ranch country, dramatic elevation climbs, and beautifully winding curves. Around here, getting there is half the adventure.
Old heritage oaks. Lake Henshaw reflections. Cattle ranch fences. Quilt trails. Weathered Gold Rush buildings. Wildflowers. Mountain switchbacks. Dramatic thunderstorm clouds. Golden hour sunsets. International Dark Sky stars. Bring the expensive glass, or bring your phone. The backcountry doesn't care.
Respect wildlife. Respect working ranches and private property. Conserve water. Follow current fire restrictions. Stay on designated trails. Pick up what you bring in. Take the photos. Keep the memories. Leave the backcountry wild.
